Teaching with Bitmoji

Students love social media, why not bring a little of that world into your classroom?

Remember Bitstrips? They were a big Facebook fad around 2012/13, you could create your own avatar and they would be inserted into various comic strips. Bitstrips launched a spin-off in 2014 called Bitmoji which is still widely used across social media, particularly Snapchat (who acquired Bitmoji in 2016).

I love Bitmoji. This year I decided to add them to my PowerPoint slides to engage students. Sometimes I insert singular pictures on a slide and other times I use them as a visual stimulus for vocabulary building. I found that the students were more interested in seeing my avatar doing different activities to do with our topic than generic clip art pictures. I often edit the pictures slightly in Paint to remove or add words to fit what we are doing.

The app is available for both Android and iOS devices – https://www.bitmoji.com
